Searching Caroline County Family Court Records Online

The primary tool for searching Caroline County family court records online is the Maryland Judiciary Case Search portal. It is free and does not require registration. You can search by name, case number, or date. Using the percent sign (%) as a wildcard is helpful when you are not certain of a full name or spelling. Results show party names, case type, filing date, and current case status.

Case Search returns docket entries, not document images. You can see the list of filings and the current status, but you cannot read the actual documents through the online portal. To get document copies, you need to contact the Clerk's Office. The case number from Case Search is what you will need when making a copy request.

Not all Caroline County records are available in the online system. Some older cases are not digitized and exist only in paper form at the courthouse. These include equity dockets from 1975 through July 1984, law dockets from 1944 through July 1984, and civil dockets from July 1984 through March 1999. These older files are accessible through the courthouse's internal Papervision system but are not searchable from outside. For those cases, you need to contact the clerk with as much identifying information as possible.

Historical records beyond what the clerk's office maintains may be held at the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis. If you are researching very old family court matters, the archives are worth contacting as a secondary source.

Types of Family Court Cases in Caroline County

Caroline County Circuit Court handles all standard family law case types. Divorce is one of the most frequent filings. Under Family Law Article Section 7-103, which was revised effective October 1, 2023, Maryland now allows divorce on three grounds: mutual consent, a six-month continuous separation, and irreconcilable differences. The prior rule requiring a full year of separation no longer applies in most cases. Couples who agree on all terms of the divorce may qualify for the mutual consent ground, which can speed up the process significantly.

Child custody disputes and visitation schedules are among the more contested matters the court handles. When parents disagree, the judge applies the best interest of the child standard and may consider a wide range of factors. Child support cases often run alongside custody matters. Paternity cases establish legal parentage when parents were unmarried. Name changes for adults and minors are filed at the circuit court as well.

Domestic violence protective orders are available under Family Law Article Section 4-504. A person who needs immediate protection can file at either the circuit or district court. Emergency protective orders can be issued by judges after hours. Final protective orders, which require a hearing, are issued by the circuit court. Guardianship and adoption cases are also filed here, though adoption records are sealed and not accessible to the public. Juvenile delinquency and CINA matters are confidential as well. Financial statements in child support cases are restricted even when other parts of the file are open.
